Collectables specialist Heritage Auctions has announced a number of new developments to the Heritage Auctions app.

Not every coin has to be old to have value for collectors. A £1 coin struck in error just last year is estimated at £1000-1400 in the TimeLine Auctions February 20-24 sale.

Judging by the number of coin proof sets that have been issued in Elizabeth II’s reign, they have become very popular with collectors. But these Royal Mint sets date much further back and are now sought-after at auction.

A scarce coin showing a portrait of the first Tudor monarch has been bought at auction on behalf of the Royal Mint Museum for £44,000.

If you want a gold coin to have rarity value, then an example from a monarch whose reign lasted only a couple of years is a good start.

Poor old Newark. A bit like Belgium and Poland over the centuries, in the English Civil War the English Midlands town ended up in the wrong place in wartime – stuck in the middle - as armies trampled back and forth across it or lay siege. The town’s misfortune is a coin collector’s gain, however, as the lozenge-shaped coins minted in Newark during the conflict have become familiar and fairly common visitors to the salerooms.
