Description:

Working as a European Furniture Specialist in the Global Fine Arts Division, this person will be responsible for the solicitation, expertise, authentication, evaluation and sale of property.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Source consignments for Furniture and Decorative Art sales in New York
• Support the appraisal and valuation needs of the department. Evaluate client’s property at Sotheby’s and independently at client locations and lead (and/or participation in) full valuation projects
• Participate in all aspects of furniture-related live auction and online sales including but not limited to research, cataloguing, condition reporting, photography, art direction, the catalogue production process and exhibition set-up
• Work with the Global Furniture and Decorative Art specialists to sell a sale by helping clients at the exhibition; client outreach; speaking to clients about the property; develop, track and communicate client interest in lots; and execute bids at sale
• Develop client relationships and support larger client teams; manage client relationships in order to enhance client loyalty and generate business; support key client activity, in particular, focusing on generating new networks of clients/collectors to Sotheby’s and promoting business opportunities across all sales channels i.e. auction, online and private sales
• Develop the growth of the cataloguer by including them on client visits, valuing sessions and detailed reviews of objects
• As needed, assist and coordinate research, both internally and with external experts
• Participate in the furniture and decorative arts community within New York – attendance at social and art world events, e.g. gallery and museum openings; increasing network contacts and relationships within this market. Also, explore any appropriate digital outlets to broaden the outreach around sales and other events e.g. Instagram, blogs and other relevant channels

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES
• Expertise and minimum 3 years’ experience in European Furniture market
• Curiosity and willingness to continually develop expertise
• Previous auction house or Art World experience essential
• Excellent writing and organizational skills
• Self-starter and proven ability to initiate business
• A team player with excellent communication skills; Ability to provide support and guidance to junior team members as appropriate
• Professional and discreet client service skills
• Strong multi-tasker, thorough, focused, with a passion and commitment to the field
