Mr Dolman, who has already started work Stateside, has been appointed “as part of the firm’s ongoing strategy to enhance Christie’s global leadership in the industry”.

He will assume full management responsibility, focusing on new business development and strategy as well as the day-to-day operations of Christie’s business in the Americas.

Mr Dolman, who is replaced in London by Lisa King, assistant managing director, joined Christie’s in 1984, becoming director and department head after several years as a specialist.

Patricia Hambrecht, president of Christie’s America, will take a sabbatical beginning in August.
