Interested buyers had to wait to the bitter end for a chance to bid on a Ziegler carpet, West Persia, 21ft 2in by 17ft 7in (6.5m x 5.4m) at Bonhams & Brooks (15/10 per cent buyer’s premium) January 30 sale when it sold at a respectable double estimate £38,000. And at Phillips (15/10 per cent buyer’s premium) on January 30, a Ziegler Mahal carpet, West Persia, 13ft 10in by 10ft 11in (4.2m x 3.3m) brought £8000; and a Donegal Arts and Crafts carpet, 14ft 5in by 12ft (4.4m x 3.7m), made £7500. Other highlights from the sales are illustrated right.

And if Londoners were spoilt for choice for Ziegler carpets in January and February, the same – surprisingly – could be said of Internet surfers browsing Circline.com before Christmas.

A Ziegler central Persian wool-pile and cotton-foundation carpet, c.1880, illustrated on the site by New York-based Beauvais Carpets, alerted the buyer to its presence and sold offline at $403,200 (£287,794) on December 13.
