It doubled the lower estimate to sell at £1600.Over estimate bids were a feature of the Saturday sale including a Royal Doulton jug depicting The Rt. Hon J.C. Smuts, D6198, Large, which took £800 and the sale also included an interesting Shorter & Son prototype jug of the great South African which doubled the lower estimate to sell at £210.
From closer to home, a Royal Doulton Pearly Boy with brown buttons took an above-estimate £780.
Cavalier leads opening action
The inaugural specialist sale of some 350 character jugs at the Stoke on Trent ceramics auctioneers Potteries Specialist Auction (12.5% buyer’s premium) on November 17 was, said the auctioneers, a great success with specialist UK dealers and collectors flocking to the Cobridge rooms.
