The Art Deco silver-mounted and enamel dressing set for a lady was complete with all pieces – a hand mirror, hair and clothes brush, scent bottle, two cream jars and a tortoiseshell comb – housed in its original cream pigskin and green silk upholstered travelling case with the initials G.E.S.
What really impressed bidders, however, was the manner in which the pieces had been mounted, each with a bar of green jade and marcasite on a cream sunburst enamel ground. Bearing the (unidentified) maker’s initials W.G.S.Ltd and hallmarked London 1936, the dressing set sold to the trade at £620.
Everything for an Art Deco lady
UK: “THIS was a small working sale with no astounding lots”, said Cheshire auctioneer Patrick Cheyne (12.5 per cent buyer’s premium) of his 378-lot sale in Altrincham on January 19, but there was one entry which did create plenty of interest.
