A main point of interest was its resemblance to a console table made by Benjamin Goodison for Frederick Prince of Wales in 1732 and housed in Hampton Court Palace. Certainly the long acanthus scrolling to the legs of this table is a hallmark of Goodison’s work.
Estimated at £10,000-15,000, the table was contested in the room and by five bidders on telephones, the final price being £23,000 plus 11.75 per cent premium and VAT.
