The sales, of “two important foreign collections of pure French taste, both of whose owners were keen to sell in Paris in the spring”, will take place in Sotheby’s Galerie Charpentier rooms opposite the Elysée Palace.

The arrangement allows all parties to abide by the existing French auction laws, getting round the delay in the long-awaited auction law reform.

The first sale will be that of the collection of Mr and Mrs Luigi Anton Laura, a family of Italian descent now living in Monte Carlo who have devoted their lives to the pursuit of rare objects, mostly furniture and decorations, especially French pieces from the 18th century, and Chinese works of art. The second sale will offer the celebrated library of Charles Hayoit, which constitutes a 70-year collection of French literature and manuscripts.

The sale of these two collections will be followed a week later by a sale of exceptional furniture and works of art, consigned by various owners.
