William Jacques, 33, may have to hand over a total of £402,000 in compensation, confiscation and costs orders. The application is being made in a compensation hearing after detectives discovered £360,000 deposited in Jacques’s name in a bank account in Havana.
Jacques was sentenced for a total of more than 20 counts of theft relating to a crime spree thought to involve at least 412 rare works worth over £1m between October 1996 and May 1999. Jacques consigned some works to auction houses and stored others in bank safe deposit boxes. Some books have been traced and returned but hundreds are still missing.
