The auctioneers decided to put on this themed event after observing that a recurring subject of many of their most successful sales of furniture and decorations in recent years has been “the irresistible appeal of objects which have been chosen by great decorators”.

“Whether genuine antiques or modern manufactures made up
‘in the style of’, whether expensive or affordable, designer-selected pieces inevitably project an extra charge of flair or drama,” say Sotheby’s.

Syrie Maugham, Colefax and Fowler, Craig Wright, Ann Getty and Tony Duquette are among the names both living and deceased that feature in this 700-plus lot sale. The mix will range from 18th and 19th century antique pieces to items of more recent manufacture made up in period style, and modern creations like this painted and parcel-gilt window bench. Designed by atelier Gaban O’Keeffe, its cornucopia ends are filled with passmenterie fruit and its squab cushion is upholstered in pleated silk with gold tufts. It is expected to fetch $15,000-20,000.
