Topping the 333 lots was a Prattware plaque advertising Crosse and Blackwell’s pickles and sauces. Decorated in black and white with a central coat-of-arms and a floral border, the plaque measured 10 by 8in (26 x 20cm) and had a small chip to the rim.
“This was an unusual and attractive piece in nice clean condition,” said specialist-in-charge Lucy Lanning of the plaque which, against hopes of up to £80, was contested to £820 by a dealer.
Another notable success was a James King’s Sunflower Pomatum jar decorated with a domed sunflower cover with a marbled rim and marbled base.
Despite some rather poor restoration, this was a rare and decorative piece and against a £60-80 estimate it brought £620.
Pot lids and pickles replace postcards
THE sale on August 16 was the first time Bonhams, Honiton (17.5% buyer’s premium) had held a specialist collectors’ sale without cigarette and postcards after the decision was made to sell these at New Bond Street. With the sale now focused firmly on Goss and crested china, pot lids, Prattware and commemorative ceramics, lots of new buyers flooded in making the sale a big success.
