While television programmes, such as Bargain Hunt have made the public aware of the excitement of buying and selling at auction, many people are uncertain of what to do, what not to do, the cost, or even what happens after a successful bid has been made.

A Guide to Buying and Selling at Auction sets out guidance for buyers and sellers in an easy-to-follow style. The booklet is a companion to the RICS’s earlier publication, Your Antiques – A guide to the care of your antiques and collectables, published last year.

RICS antiques and fine art spokesman, Michael Newman, said: “Thousands of people from all walks of life are attracted by the bustle and excitement of the auction and the chance they may pick up a bargain.

There are many more who would love to go to an auction, but are put off because they are unfamiliar with the auction process or the thought that through a misplaced nod or wink they may buy something expensive by mistake.

“This booklet clearly explains the process before, during and after the sale, and just as important, how to find a reputable firm of auctioneers.”

To celebrate the launch of the booklet 1000 copies are being given away. Call the RICS contact centre on 0870 333 1600 for a copy.
