Having spent over 20 years with Phillips in England and the USA prior to joining Christie’s, Mr Madley has now taken an equity position with Hamptons where he will be managing director of a new division of the company Hamptons auctioneers.

“Hampton’s are the only international estate agency with an auction business,” he told the Antiques Trade Gazette.

“We have a good name and a network of estate agencies extending right across the South of England from Mayfair to Bristol.

“Our representatives are constantly visiting properties, so we are in an excellent position to exploit our existing network and build our auction business.”

Though Hamptons have 50 estate agency offices, they have only one active centre for auctions with two rooms at Godalming in Surrey. These are the former Messenger May Baverstock rooms which they acquired in one of the big estate agency deals of the 1980s, but they have never fully exploited the potential of their auction business.
For the moment regular fine art and antique sales will continue at their Baverstock House saleroom in Godalming, with Saturday sales in their secondary saleroom.

They will be considering the future of a third saleroom in Marlborough which is currently out of use.
