For the past few years tribal art sales have been held in Amsterdam but Paris will now be Christie’s centre for this category, reflecting the considerable interest in this field in France and Belgium.
Sales of American Indian art will continue in New York as part of the Americana programme, as will occasional single-owner tribal art auctions.
Christie’s sales will also feature pre-Columbian art and to this end Fatma Turkkan-Wille has been appointed as a senior consultant. Ms Turkkan-Wille has several years auction experience in this field and more recently has worked as an art advisor in Zurich. Christie’s next tribal art sale in Paris is planned for June 12.
Christie’s refocus tribal art sales
Christie’s have announced two appointments to their tribal art department as they refocus their international programme of sales in this field. Tim Teuten, formerly head of Christie’s tribal art in New York and London, but more recently an independent consultant to the auctioneers, is to head the department. It will be based in Paris where he will oversee the organisation of sales and hold auctions twice a year.
