Complementing this array of modern talent are works by older established names including Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada, Michael Cardew and Lucie Rie.
From the contemporary craftsmen, Edward Hughes will bring his colourful stoneware pieces, which have been acclaimed in Japan to the extent that he is a member of the Kokjugaki Society, of which Hamada and Bernard Leach were notable forerunners.
Elizabeth Fritsch is also internationally recognised and she has returned to working in coloured slips on hand-built forms, inspired by fine art and music which is characteristic of her work.
The selling exhibition again demonstrates the relationship between traditional and contemporary work, which is a trademark of Joanna Bird’s shows.
Mrs Bird is a busy woman these days. She offers a variety of work in her own West London gallery where her next exhibition is scheduled for November. Before then, from October 16 to 19, she will be exhibiting at SOFA (Sculptural Objects and Functional Art) Chicago at the city’s Navy Pier and next February she is pencilled in for the first Collect 2004 at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Contemporary pottery tradition
CHISWICK-based dealer in studio pottery, Joanna Bird, presents her seventh annual exhibition at Browse & Darby, 19 Cork Street, London W1, from September 15 to 20, centred on the work of eight leading contemporary potters, Elizabeth Fritsch, Julian Stair, Edward Hughes, William Plumptre, John Spearman, Daniel Fisher, Michael O’ Brien and Danlami Aliyu.
