This vintage fashion emporium is situated near the Victory Cafe in the basement of Grays Mews, Davies Mews, W1 and offers a permanent collection of frocks, ballgowns, lace, linen, handbags, jewellery and much more from the stock of half a dozen or so leading dealers in the field.
Vintage Modes has been decorated by the Scottish interiors and theatrical designer Finlay McLay and with lashings of silk and velvet the look is unashamedly opulent and sexy. Mr McLay’s penchant for chandeliers and mirrors reminds one that he numbers the Sultan of Brunei and a number of sheikhs among his clients.
Over 100 years of fashion is on sale, from late Victorian bustles through Biba and Balenciaga to punk and beyond. Prices range from £20 to many thousands and word of mouth already indicates this is going to be a popular destination at London’s top centre.
But I don’t know if owner and founder of Grays Benny Gray’s observation “a frock on a woman is like a wrapper on a sweet” will be so popular with all his new customers.

MAYFAIR’s smart antiques market, Grays, is close enough to Bond Street to attract its fair share of fashionistas, but now it has become a couture centre itself with the opening last week of the luxuriously appointed Vintage Modes.
