Decanters first appeared around 1700, replacing green glass bottles as a more elegant way of serving wine. Their heyday was in the 19th century when large matching services of glasses and decanters became an integral part of Victorian dining.

The exhibition features some 100 examples from the museum’s collections, from early serving bottles and carafes to such modern versions as the cocktail decanter and shaker which appeared in the 1930s.
