It was catalogued as “in the style of Thomas Hope”, but the
successful buyer, Martin Levy of Mayfair dealers H. Blairman & Son, along with the underbidder Michael Lipitch, recognised the table as the work of George Bullock.

One of the most significant
cabinetmakers in early 19th
century Britain, Bullock undertook various commissions for important clients including Lord Cholmondley for Cholmondley Castle, Cheshire; The Earl of Mansfield for Scone Palace, Perthshire and The Duke of Atholl for Blair Castle, Perthshire.

The table in Woodbridge was estimated at £3000-4000 and sold to Mr Levy on the telephone at £59,000. The auctioneers do not charge any buyer’s premium.
