The family business, S&H Jewell Ltd, was established in 1830 and has not moved more than 200 yards in all that time. Launched in Little Queen Street (now Kingsway) and moving to Great Queen Street in the 19th century, the dealership relocated to High Holborn in the early years of the last century and remained there for almost 60 years before moving to its present location at 26 Parker Street, WC2 in 1968.

Specialising in 19th and 20th century boardroom, library and dining furniture, Jewell’s were early members of BADA until too much Edwardian (then classified as repro) furniture crept into their stock.

On the drastic change of direction, Geoff told me: “It has been a long and hard decision to make, but necessitated by a large increase in rent, the isolation of the shop and the impact of congestion charging. But I will not give up the antiques scene as, with over 30 years experience in the trade, one becomes smitten by it.”

And on a commercial note the dealer added: “Meanwhile, all remaining stock is favourably priced, as I took the decision to lock the door and walk away uncluttered, and with an open mind as to which way the future will develop.”

After September Geoff will be available on 01932 222690.
