That is the promise of Southwark Council and developers Urban Catalyst, whose regeneration plans were first published about five years ago.
The archaeological excavation of the site’s scheduled monument, the 10th Century Bermondsey Abbey, can go ahead soon now that the council have issued Compulsory Purchase Orders for privately owned land within the proposed development area.
Ken Dytor, chief executive of Urban Catalyst, said: “The support of traders, stall providers, the trading association and public is crucial to the success of the scheme. We would like to stress that the antiques market will continue trading on Fridays throughout the archaeological and construction process.”
The antiques market is expected to be an important element of the scheme, although traders have been concerned at the decline in business there since the redevelopment was first announced.

EXCAVATION work due to start shortly on archaeological remains, as part of the Bermondsey redevelopment project, will not interfere with the New Caledonian Antiques Market.
