Mounted on wooden bases, these 4in (10cm) high busts were two of a series of just four bookends (the others are Mr Micawber and Mr Pickwick) made by Doulton between 1934 and the onset of war. Accordingly, they are very scarce so no surprise to see this duo take a mid-estimate £1250 when offered by Lawrences (12.5% buyer's premium) of Bletchingley, Surrey on June 8-10.
Bookends support £1250
SAIREY Gamp and Tony Weller are two of the most commonly encountered Royal Doulton character jugs (and accordingly among the cheapest) but only very rarely are the two Dickens’ characters seen as bookends.
