Such was the case with a 30-lot Clarice Cliff collection that formed part of the 550-lot sale held by John Goodwin (10% buyer's premium) at Ledbury on February 4, which attracted bids from as far afield as the USA and Australia.

Although the vendor's hopes had been too high for every lot to get away in the current climate, 60 per cent did so at prices the consignor felt higher than were obtainable in London.

"The London trade were very much in evidence but they were reluctant to bid up to reserve levels," observed auctioneer Christopher Maulkin. "However, we are still experiencing a very strong private demand for Clarice Cliff here in 'the sticks'."

Top seller was the 9in (23cm) Double Diamond-pattern vase, right.

In the perfect condition buyers are demanding at present, it sold to a private buyer at £700.
