Many of the items stolen were relatively modern and related to Mr Mellor’s career during which he was Champion National Hunt jockey three times.

Items stolen include a bronze sculpture by Philip Blacker depicting Royal Mail and Royal Stewart, two horses trained by Mr Mellor, negotiating the Canal Turn in the Grand National in 1981. Also taken was a gold-plated replica of the King George VI trophy from 1964, a silver-plated model of a horse on an onyx plinth presented to Mr Mellor by the Punter’s Club to mark his 1000th winner, and three presentation silver salvers including those for the Swedish Grand National and Amoco series at Newbury racecourse.
