Although it looks rather dilapidated, it had much to recommend it, being totally complete with all
original parts. Furthermore, it had been in the same Malton, Yorkshire, family since new and, having been laid up since the First World War, had only an apparently genuine 28,006 miles on the clock.
As well as full documentation, it came with a 1912 hand-drawn map for a tour of the Dales found in one of the door pockets. It was, however, another local connection which clinched the sale.
Tennants' Sarah Goldsbrough thought there might be interest in the Wolverhampton area where Star had their factory from 1898 to 1935. So it proved when, having read of the sale in his local paper, a retired developer who had once owned the Star premises, decided he needed a new challenge and bid for the vehicle sight unseen. He had to go to £25,000 (against a £10,000-15,000 estimate) to beat off Dutch interest but said later he would have bid whatever it took.
He began his new life as a car restorer within a day of its purchase.
