Only three jewellery lots failed to get away and, as is most often the case, it was the diamond jewellery that took the section’s top prices, with a solitaire ring the most expensive lot at £1300. Furniture surprises included a walnut chest-on-chest with an inlaid concave sunburst decoration. Catalogued as George I style and in need of considerable attention, it was taken to £1700 by two buyers who felt confident it was the genuine 18th century article.
If the market for mid to low range quality furniture is still not what it was, demand continues for quality reproduction fare, underscored by the £2400 bid by a local private buyer to secure an elegant George III-style upholstered walnut settee.
