Of this, $1.049bn is from marketplace revenues, 22 per cent up on the $858m for the third quarter of 2005.

The results are broadly in line with predictions thanks to a boost in auction activity late in the summer. Other comparable revenues came from PayPal, which registered a $350m turnover, up 41 per cent from $247m, and Skype ($50m, a 13 per cent increase from $44m).

Overall net profits were up 10 per cent at $281m, after the $667m the company paid out to repurchase 24m shares. This takes eBay a third of the way into their share repurchasing programme.

Confirmed registered users totalled 212m, 26 per cent up on the 168m users at the end of the same period last year.

Meanwhile, PayPal reported 123m registered accounts, up 41 per cent from 87m, with Skype reporting 136m registered users, up 20 per cent from 113m.

EBay predict a full year turnover of between $5.86bn and $5.92bn, but expect slower growth in 2007 of 17-21 per cent.
