Opened on Monday, January 15, the office will act as a base to expand Bonhams’ Far Eastern interests. They have named China, Japan, India, South Korea, Indonesia and Singapore as key targets.

Bonhams’ first three auctions, comprising Contemporary Asian Art, Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, and the Green Willow Hall Collection of Jade Carvings, will take place on Saturday, May 26 at the Asia International Arts and Antiques Fair.

Chairman of Bonhams Asia Colin Sheaf said: “While we intend initially to hold auctions of Chinese art and jewellery, which are a well-established tradition in Hong Kong, we hope in the future to widen the scope of the art we offer, as we see the emergence of new tastes and regional interests in Asia.”

Bonhams managing director and watch specialist in Hong Kong is Carson Chan. His staff will initially include specialists in Asian Contemporary art, traditional Chinese art including ceramics, jewellery and watches.

The office will also be used for hosting temporary exhibitions and previews of major works of art being sold in Bonhams’ overseas auction centres.
