This 10th to 7th century BC, 7in (18cm) high bronze is the work of the Nuraghic people of Sardinia. Rupert Wace sold it at Maastricht with an asking price of €120,000.

The feeling was that the runaway success of the YSL-Bergé sale boded well for a fair such as Maastricht. That was a one-off sale, but then this is a one-off annual fair.

There is seldom much significant business on the vernissage, but there were sales made, if not spectacular ones, around the stands.

London antiquities dealer Rupert Wace sold one of his star pieces, a Sardinian Iron Age bronze in the first hour to a new German client.
