It is inscribed in gilt Success to the Manchester Cavalry plus the additional legends To Protect our Families & Property and In Defence of our King & Country.
The 120 volunteers came from a broad spectrum of occupations but tended to hold Tory political views with a hatred of radicals.
On August 16, 1819 the same Yeomanry was famously called out to break up a meeting on parliamentary reform at St Peter's Field, Manchester: the Peterloo Massacre was the result.
The regiment was disbanded in 1824.
The rare jug was estimated to fetch £500-1000 as part of the August 21 sale of commemoratives and pot lids conducted by Berkshire specialists Historical & Collectable (formerly part of Special Auction Services) at Kennetholme, Midgham.
It took £2200 from a collector of political memorabilia determined to unite it with another similar jug in his possession.
What was described as the 'sister' to this evocative Manchester Cavalry jug depicts Henry 'Orator' Hunt (who was scheduled to speak at St Peter's Field) and is inscribed Liberty.
The buyer's premium was 15 per cent.
