The application by the owners to gain a time extension in order to redevelop the market is still under consideration and is likely to be put before Kensington and Chelsea council’s planning committee in June.
At this stage, the future of the early morning 40-stall covered market remains unclear, but Portobello campaigners say the planning application to demolish the market and build a new open-plan retail space with apartments above, which was granted in 2007, should be completely reconsidered now that the three-year window to carry out these works has elapsed.
