Measuring 13 x 16in (33cm x 41) and numbered 38/60, it had a label for the Redfern Gallery, London, where it was purchased in 1956.

Prints such as this appear quite regularly at auction and, provided they are in good condition, can fetch several thousand pounds.

Having spent years behind dirty glass, Chorley's example was not in particularly good condition, but, with a solid provenance, it bettered the £600-800 estimate at the sale on February 2, selling over the phone at £3800.

The buyer's premium was 17.5%.
