It is the time when the galleries and auction houses get together to mount a burgeoning roster of exhibitions, auctions and related events that make up Asia Week New York.

At the core of its nine-day run from March 15-23 are the 43 galleries (a mix of local and guest dealers) around Manhattan putting on a range of selling exhibitions.

The Arts of Pacific Asia  fair has been shelved this year following the lack of a suitable venue but, in terms of dealers' shows, this year's Asia Week is bigger than ever. Eighteen new galleries have joined the roster, half from overseas, predominantly the UK and France.

Indian, Himalayan and South East Asian works will be on offer at 19 different galleries, Chinese works of art at 18, Japanese at nine and Korean at two. Together they encompass work dating back several millennia to pieces made only a year or two ago.

Auctions

Complementing these events, five auction houses will be offering 16 different sales, while museum exhibitions, lectures and other non-commercial events add power to the magnet that pulls collectors, dealers and other Asian aficionados into Manhattan.

LikeAsian Art in London, its counterpart across the pond, Asia Week New York  kicks off with an invitation only reception in an institution (The Solomon R Guggenheim Museum this year) and features an open weekend on March 16-17 when participants open their doors to the public.

There is also an indispensable guide giving the entire calendar of events with opening times, addresses and contact details for dealers' shows, auctions, viewings and much more, which can be found at www.asiaweekny.com
