It was perhaps half a century older than that, made c.1878, in the Japanesque style to a design by Tiffany's artistic director Edward C. Moore (1827-91).

A similar example with a silver bird and pine branch finial was sold by Christie's New York in January 2008 for $12,000. But this caddy sold in Derbyshire was of added interest for the addition of an ivory netsuke finial of a father with his two children beside a tengu mask.

This was once probably part of the cache of Japanese arts and crafts purchased by Christopher Dresser, and authorised by Edward C. Moore, on behalf of Tiffany & Co in 1867-77.

Estimated at £10,000-15,000, it sold to a phone bidder for £14,000 on June 27.

The buyer's premium was 17.5%.
