The former minister of culture and heritage in Qatar amassed a huge collection in areas as diverse as vintage bicycles, antiquities and natural history specimens, which were to be spread across five existing and planned Doha museums.

His life was not without controversy. Sacked from his ministerial post in 2005, and placed under house arrest, in 2012 the High Court in London froze some of his assets over unpaid auction house invoices.
