The 3ft 4in x 2ft 1in (1m x 64cm) poster, condition guided A-/A, was designed by the Swiss artist Alex Walter Diggelmann and printed by the Zurich firm of JC Müller.

It was contested by a bidder in the room and three phones to a multiple of its £10,000-15,000 estimate.

The price beats the previous high for a poster paid in the same rooms back in 2008 for a 1952 design advertising Russian ski resorts that was pursued by several Russian bidders to £30,000.

Christie's sale featured 10 different posters by the Swiss artist Diggelmann (1902-87) but this example, described "as rare and desirable… with a strong design and featuring a top skiing destination", was one the saleroom had never offered before.

Swann Auction Galleries in New York sold another copy of the Gstaad design in February 2015 for $24,000.
