The former Foxes striker (he played from 1978-85) himself said in a now infamous tweet: ‘Claudio Ranieri? Really?’ when the new Leicester manager was unveiled to a sceptical and underwhelmed audience.

Oops. Ranieri then of course took an unfancied squad which had been bottom of the Premier League the season before to an astonishing title triumph.

If you can’t wait to see the 55-year-old in just his underwear, try bidding at Stroud Auction Rooms on July 13. A pair of pants signed by the ex-footballer-now-TV-presenter is estimated at just £30-50 in the Gloucestershire sale.

The white Sloggi pants in a glazed frame bear Lineker’s signature and the message ‘Football like life itself is a load of balls. Shoot straight’.

Lineker scored 103 goals in 219 games for his home town. He remains a strong supporter of the club.

This iconic item of football memorabilia is at a slightly different end of the scale to a lot being offered the day before at Sotheby’s: Geoff Hurst’s 1966 World Cup Final shirt, estimated at £300,000-500,000.
