An article in The Art Newspaper raised concerns about plans for the installation project Monumenta Contemporary Art Commission as well as the Fiac Modern and Contemporary Art Fair, which are currently held in the building.
Former head of the Grand Palais, Jean-Paul Cluzel, discussed the plans with Le Monde in December 2015, saying that the works would cost around €393m. Cluzel, former head of Réunion des Musées Nationaux, added that the revenue from the increased gallery space created by the renovations would allow the repayment of loans needed for the completion of the process.
According to The Art Newspaper article, works are dependent not only on the acquisition of sufficient funds, but also on the government's approval. If the Grand Palais is incorporated in the Grand Paris urban development initiative, it may be granted funding by the French government and local authorities.
However, if an ongoing Parisian bid for the 2024 Olympic Games is successful, the structure may be appropriated to host sporting events. If plans are approved, work will commence in 2019.
