The bronze figure of the Hindu goddess Kali carried an estimate of £1000-1500 and brought interest from two keen bidders. It was eventually bought by a member of the European trade on the telephone.

The 7in (18.5cm) high multi-headed, multi-armed bronze of the tantric deity wears a skull necklace, and a smaller necklace inlaid with semi-precious stones. It came from a private collection in the US and is described as 16th/17th century.

Fresh To The Market

Matthew Barton said: “It was obviously something that two people really wanted and it was conservatively estimated. It was consigned by an elderly collector, fresh to the market, which is always a big thing.”

The firm, which operates its auctions from 25 Blythe Road near Kensington Olympia, sold the bronze during its European & Asian Works of Art auction yesterday.
