The London hotel in Knightsbridge is putting the ‘for sale’ sign on 2500 furnishings, fixtures and fittings as part of a redevelopment of the 115-year old building.

Auctioneer Pro Auction is holding the sale at The Cadogan Suite in the Millennium hotel on Sloane Street on October 24-26.

The sale is also being hosted online via thesaleroom.com.

The 2500 lot auction comprises reproduction furnishings in Georgian and Regency style and has a total estimate of £200,000-250,000.

A timed auction of 1200 paintings including lithographic prints and around 200 oil on canvas works will also be held in due course.

Third Make-over

The hotel started life as a gentlemen’s club in 1902 and became a hotel in the 1920s.

The 198 room-hotel was branded Mandarin Oriental in 1996 and received a £57m make-over. It was refurbished again in 2009 which cost £30m and it is furnishings from this make-over that are now being sold.

The hotel is undergoing another extensive refurbishment this autumn.

Notable guests and noteworthy events at the hotel over the years have included Lady Doris Vyner’s silver wedding party in 1948; “Pavarotti in the Park” in 1992; the 80th birthday party of Baroness Thatcher in 2005 and a Royal pre-wedding get-together in 2011.
