The museum is relocating to the Grade II-listed former Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington High Street, premises that are three times the size of its current base near Tower Bridge which is closing on June 30. There will be new galleries and retail facilities, as well as catering and event spaces.

Phillips auctioneers are holding Time for Design, a benefit auction for the museum, on April 28 at their Berkeley Square saleroom.

A Phillips spokesperson said: “Time for Design, co-curated by Deyan Sudjic, the director of the Design Museum and Alexander Payne, worldwide director of design at Phillips, will feature design classics, contemporary masters and works from emerging talent donated by collectors, gallerists, designers, and patrons of the museum.”

Time for Design is a live auction following Phillips's Design Evening Sale and an online-only auction that will run from April 7-May 2 on phillips.com.

For the first time the new museum includes a free permanent display.
