But if national traditions can’t always make it across the pond intact, one Chelsea art gallery shows that art sometimes can.
Jonathan Cooper’s ongoing exhibition An American Vision: From Wyoming to Maine marks the first ever solo show for Wyoming-born painter T Allen Lawson in the UK.
Continuing until December 13, the gallery showcases 19 of Lawson’s works. These scenes of contemporary America explore themes of nature, land use and the interaction of wildlife and man in various media, though particularly in oil.
Many pictures feature the landscape of the western US or New England, both of which Lawson has counted as home, and showcases the changes in his working style as he moved from plein air painting to the studio over time.
Lawson’s work has been included at the Smithsonian as well as in the permanent collection of the White House – in 2008, the work featured on the White House official Christmas Card.
Prices range from £4000-34,000.
