Laib, who is based in New York, worked at Christie’s for 17 years where he was senior vice president, senior specialist in Postwar and Contemporary art.
Laib’s departure from Christie’s follows that of Brett Gorvy the chairman and international head of Postwar and Contemporary art who had worked at the auction house for 23 years.
Laib brings the estate of American wire sculptor Ruth Asawa (1926-2013) with him to David Zwirner. The multinational gallery is now the sole representative of the estate.
An exhibition of Asawa’s works is expected to feature in the gallery towards the end of 2017.
Last year, David Zwirner also competed for and secured representation of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation.
The gallery opens its fourth location in Hong Kong in the autumn of this year.
