The Antiques Roadshow ceramics expert has written a letter highlighting the importance of the pottery studio.

Poole Pottery’s studio and shop will close in October and it is trying to find a new premises in the Dorset town. However, the task is difficult as it needs space for a kiln as well as retail space.

The pottery company has been on the same site in Poole since it was founded in 1873.

Denby Holdings acquired the firm in 2011, but after negotiations with the landlord of the site it has failed to reach agreement and will have to close on October 15.

Currently the studio in Poole makes one-off examples of its pieces while the mass-produced pieces are made at Denby’s Middleport Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent.

A petition to try to keep the pottery studio in the town has been started by the Poole Pottery Collectors Club and more than 1700 people have signed it.
