As co-chairmen the pair will focus on business-getting and work with top collectors in their respective areas. Stone will be based in Asia while Zonars will focus on the Americas and Europe. In addition, Stone will work with Rebecca Wei, president of Christie’s Asia to define and implement strategy in Asia

Stone joined Christie’s in 2000 and has overseen Asian art departments for the auction house in Hong Kong, London, New York and Paris. He was previously managing director of Christie’s Asia and representative director of Christie’s Japan in Tokyo.

Zonars is a specialist in Chinese works of art and has previously served as deputy chairman for Christie’s Americas.

Specialist roles

These appointments are the latest in a series following the arrival of the new CEO Guillaume Cerrutti in January. A spokesperson for Christie’s told ATG in a statement that Cerrutti “has moved to ensure that our top specialists are at the front and centre of the company’s endeavours”.

Those in new roles include Giovanna Bertazzoni and Adrian Meyer, now co-chairmen of the impressionist and modern art department as well as Orlando Rock and Jody Wilkie now co-chairmen of the decorative arts department. The latter was also made director of decorative arts in the Americas.

The spokesperson said that these appointments are a way to “remain ahead” by being “adaptable, relevant and focused” and added that “specialist expertise is central to serving our clients”.
