The show, The Artful Book, opens this week at the National Art Library in the V&A. It celebrates the history of the society which launched in 1947 with is first title Tales by Tolstoy, a copy of which will be included in the exhibition.

The society was founded by Charles Ede who was also a specialist in antiquities and opened the business which continues in Mayfair today.

The Folio Society issues high-quality illustration editions of classic texts, pairing them with select images or commissioned illustrations as well as with special commentaries in some volumes. The society continues today under the leadership of Lady Gavron.

A selection of original artwork commissioned for Folio Society publications will also be on show. Among the key exhibits are Leonard Rosoman’s illustrations for Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and Jane Lydbury’s illustrations for a collection of Emily Dickinson’s poems.

The exhibition runs from September 5 – January 28, 2018. Admission is free.
