Participants in the sessions get the chance to learn about the ancient custom, which is at least 6000 years old, and are introduced to two different techniques by owner Kitty Walsh. The Easter-themed event is open to children and adults.
“I’m really excited to be offering our first workshop this Easter at Modern Folk. It’s a great way to get kids and adults thinking about folk traditions and crafts, and engaging with art and antiques,” says Walsh.
The gallery introduces traditional techniques such as pysanka, which uses paint-resistant beeswax to achieve intricate designs. Visitors are encouraged to recreate the effect on wooden eggs with basic paints and tools.
Sessions take place at 11:30am and 3pm on Friday and Saturday at the Bermondsey business and last for one hour each.
“We have lots of plans for similar events in the future - from basket weaving to still life painting. We think it’s a great way to give our visitors a memorable experience,” Walsh adds. “As antique dealers we can really let people get hands on with older works of art, which will hopefully inspire them to make their own masterpieces.”
Modern Folk opened its shop October last year and offers a range of traditional and contemporary folk art and textiles.
