The painting was hammered down to an English collector at Whyte's Irish & International Art Auction on May 29.
Previously owned by collectors George and Maura McClelland, the painting by the Modern British artist (1913-89) was one of his later still lifes, painted in 1969-70. Estimated at €400,000-600,000 it was the top lot of the sale.
Another highlight was Irish artist Louis le Brocquy’s tapestry Adam and Eve in the garden (1951-52) estimated at €80,000 - €120,000. It sold for an above-estimate €140,000 to a US collector.
Whyte's managing director Ian Whyte said the sale was the firm’s best result since 2007 with 75% of lots sold and a sales total of €1.7m. He joked: “The Celtic Phoenix is in full flight.”
