The new owner is thought to be a Chinese collector who bought the 1912 oil on canvas in a private sale last summer for $150m.

Winfrey purchased the painting at a Christie’s Impressionist and Modern art sale in New York in 2006 for $78.5m (then £43.4m) plus buyer’s premium, still a record for the artist at auction and, at the time, the third most expensive painting ever sold.

The painting was part of a high-profile restitution case and was one of four pictures by Klimt that appeared at the record-breaking sale, which generated a premium-inclusive $491.5m (£271m).

While another Klimt portrait restored to the Bloch-Bauer heirs, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, was sold privately to Ronald Lauder for $135m also in 2006, the identity of the buyer of Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II has remained unknown until now.

Winfrey loaned the painting anonymously to the Museum of Modern Art in 2014. Last year, during the course of the loan period, Winfrey was approached through entertainment mogul David Geffen by Larry Gagosian who had lined up a buyer.

The painting appeared recently at the Neue Galerie in New York next to Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
