Postcards of Cirencester Market Place through the ages come to auction in the Gloucestershire town

Cirencester has welcomed a new marketplace after a £1.3m redevelopment and months of roadworks. But for those feeling nostalgic for what the town centre used to look like, a collection of postcards offered at auction will help the sentimental come to terms with the changes.

A large collection of picture postcards, from the late Victorian era to the 1930s, will be going under the hammer at a Cotswold auction house Moore Allen & Innocent.

Photographers including T.W. Gough, F. Mortimer Savory, and W. Dennis Moss captured the town as it was before cars parked along the road.

The postcards record the comings and goings of town life such as when the Earl of Bathurst’s hounds and horses rode through the streets from The Vale of the White Horse Hunt.

Also included are images of the villages around Cirencester – from Ampney Crucis to Westonbirt.

The single lot caries an estimate of £100-150 and will be offered at Moore Allen & Innocent’s March 31 auction at its Burford Road saleroom in Cirencester.
