Among the 1057 people who received an award was a vice chairman for Sotheby’s in the US. Hugh Hildesley received an overseas MBE for services to charity. The senior auctioneer joined Sotheby’s in 1961 and the firm credits him as playing “an integral role in the company’s formative years in New York”.
Elizabeth Crawford, suffrage historian and book and ephemera dealer, has been awarded an OBE in the 2018 Queen’s birthday honours list. Crawford, who launched her business Woman and Her Sphere in 1984, received the award for services to education.
Dr Charles Saumarez Smith, chief executive of the Royal Academy of Art, which is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year, was awarded a knighthood.
Historian and broadcaster Professor Simon Schama also received a knighthood and posted on Twitter that he saw the award “as an honour to the importance of the humanities in our culture”.

Presenter and historian Professor Mary Beard received a damehood for services to the study of classical civilisations.
Augustus Casely-Hayford, the British curator and director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington DC, was awarded an OBE.
